The down-side of writing...

Okay... there are TONS of fabulous reasons to write but there are probably more than one not to. I've heard it said, if you can give up writing, then you probably should. It's an obsession, a compulsion, a calling much more than a decision to most people.

I feel that it's my calling and most of the time, I love it. There's nothing more exciting than the opportunities that come with a blank page or the knowledge that you're only a couple of chapters off completing a book. I'm thriving on the latter at the moment. But there's one thing I'd do a LOT more of if I didn't write... it's probably the thing that led me to write in the first place.

You guessed it.

READING!

When I'm writing hard on a book, I barely have any time to read. Writing takes up the time that would equal relaxation/leisure time in most people's world. I don't watch tv much, because that's the time when I write. I only read a little just before bed because any free time on evenings and weekends is taken up writing.

As a result, I am so depressingly behind on my TBR pile. I think I've probably finished two novels this month and one of them I may actually have started last month. There are SO many books out there I want to read. I keep buying them even if I don't have the time to read them.

So... as I head towards the finish line on my current wip - Hollywood Heartbreak - I'm already planning a reading vacation, some time off from writing where I indulge my love of books.

Is there anything aside from reading, you miss because of writing?

x
Rach!

Rach - I have 17 christmas books to read, some of them are last years! But I've started now and am determined to finish, maybe it will give me an idea for one of my own!

*sigh* There just aren't enough hours in the day. I used to devour books but now have to make do with a chapter a night, which isn't near as much fun. Between ms I go on a reading binge too. It's our reward for finishing, I suppose :)

Reading is definitely #1 because it's a casualty of writing BUT I do glut on books once I finish an ms.

Something else I miss is movies - no time to sit and watch a 2-3hr flick. Actually even an hour is too long when I'm writing. So again, big movie-a-thons once I finish.

Housework - but then, that's not something I really miss -LOL.

Yep, I'm definitely with you. And I think it's bad for my writing to not have time to read - I can't wait until this book is (properly!) done and I can read again :)

Aw Kerri - that is so sweet. Hope you enjoy it and all the other books you get to read over Christmas :)

Aimee - I'm about a chap a night girl now too if I'm lucky and I hate it!

Kylie - ooh yes, movie and tv. What are they? I miss them and also miss watching with my hubby, although I think he likes having full control of the remote :) Housework - don't miss THAT at all.

Leah - I agree not reading can be bad for writing. It's why I still try and do a little, even if it really is a little, every night!

Oh I feel your pain, Rach! I miss reading enormously while I'm in the middle of writing a book. I do everything in my power to squeeze some in along the way but, once I finish a WIP, I binge! I read new books, old books, books that have been recommended, newspapers, magazines, even aircraft manuals! Anything to get a fix :-)

But I also miss long chats with my family and friends.... Which means I then go into socializing overload which threatens my reading time again...

I wouldn't swap the rollercoaster for anything although I do wish my day job took up a little less time!

Sigh. I soooo hear you, Rach. I need a long flop-about holiday so I can make a dent in my TBR pile. And I have some favourites in there I've been hanging out to read for months....one's even been there a year. Can't bring myself to pick it up because it's a 1000+ page non-romance historial. That's going to take some serious dedication!

I definitely miss reading when I'm in the middle of writing a book - feel like I'm cheating on my own characters if I "sneak off" and read something else! I also miss sewing, used to do a lot of that (had the boxes and boxes of fabric in the garage to prove it too!)

Rachael Johns said...

Helene- Yes, writing has made me into a bit of a hermit as well. MUST remember to touch base with all my good freinds once this book is done. If they're still talking to me that is :(

Cathryn - I'm in AWE! No way could I read anything that big at the moment.

Veronica - cheating on your characters, I like that. Oh and I miss sewing too. ONE day...

Yay! I feel normal! I only seem to come across articles/comments by writers who never stop reading, throughout all phases of writing their novels. They insist you must keep reading, no matter what.

But I just can't. When I'm writing the world of my novel takes over my head; when I'm reading, the world of that novel takes over my head. I don't have enough room for both worlds. Of course, early on I keep reading for as long as I can, until it starts to interfere, but even so, whoever I'm reading ends up taking over my voice a little, so I have to watch for that.

And I binge-read between books as well!

My writing times eats into the time I would have to chat on the phone with friends/ family.

I also miss sitting down and watching a DVD or an intersting documentary on TV. No time for that unfortunately *sigh*

Umm....I am such a bad reader these days. I'm like Aimee, I do binge-read when I've come to a standtstill on the current ms.

Rachael Johns said...

Joanne - I'm guilty of deserting my friends and family during writing too :(

Jackie - I really, really MISS reading but when I stop writing, I'm itching to start a new mss asap, so it's a bit of a quandry!

Oh its hard, trying to write at set times when there are no kids, no hubby and then having my other jobs done...and trying to fit in reading?!? So not enough hours in the day. If I go walking, I take a book and read, also while watering my garden I read. The only other thing I miss is watching movies and just having time to chill. To have time where your mind could go blank...oh thats right we are women...that never happens lol.

I couldn't have said it better Rach. But the internal force behind a writer is too strong to ignore, otherwise I think we'd drive everyone around us nuts. lol.
